With the new version of VMware Pro, NVMe disk type can now be used, but when you want to use an old system such as Windows 7, you need to install some Hotfixes by Microsoft Windows

supports the Client Intel® SSD's based on PCIe* NVMe* and Windows 7 We have released hotfixes for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. The NVMe drive is NOT the primary drive, there is another SSD where the OS be loaded and that drive is supported just fine by Microsoft Intel® NVMe* driver 4.

I want to reload my system but can't find that patch at this time. At one time there was a patch or fix for using a PCIe adapter with an NVMe M.2 drive in Windows 7. If I had to guess the BIOS in the Alienware 17R3 currently does not support NVMe and any PCIexpress SSDs are all being implemented as AHCI.NVME m.2 driver for Win 7 64 bit. What are the plans / when can users expect a BIOS update that completely supports the 950 Pro, since it appears the limitation is entirely in the BIOS. However with the onset of consumer devices with an M.2 interface it is imperative that device manufacturers are clear on what exactly is supported in their device, B / M keying, SATA, PCIe, AHCI, NVMe.) (I understand the marketing of Samsung is not the responsibility of Dell / Alienware.

However as a consumer I find this a rather unacceptable response since the device is technically an OEM device. The Samsung 950 Pro is being marketed as a consumer upgradable device for devices with M.2, specifically Skylake based products. I know the official line is that the PM951 is the only PCI express M.2 device that works with the Alienware 17 R3. However I have a question that I am sure many people will be asking since there are quite a few people out there that were anticipating installing this in their Alienware 17 R3.

I have it installed in windows 10 in the second M.2 slot on my Alienware 17 R3. I am happy to report that the drive appears to physically work in the machine.
